The ascent of the Piton des Neiges, the highest point in Reunion (3,070 m) and anywhere else in the Indian
Ocean, boasts a unique 360° panorama at its summit.
Whatever route you choose, the climb is long and arduous. The Caverne Dufour Refuge provides welcome
respite along the way and, above all, the chance to set off at dawn and admire the sunrise from the summit. Up at an altitude of 2400m, you’re sure to have an authentic and immersive stay.
Our accommodation is simple but comfortable, providing an authentic experience with dormitory rooms or bungalows with shared bathroom facilities.
Creole cuisine : Creole meals are prepared using mainly fresh local ingredients. They are a great opportunity
to chat with other hikers.
A friendly reminder : these are isolated premises where operations may be limited due to difficulties in
supplying water and energy sources.
Waste disposal is also difficult to manage, as its volume exceeds the building’s operating capacity. On a
protected site like this, eco-responsible behaviour is therefore essential:
- Take spare batteries before you leave because you won’t be able to recharge your electronic devices.
- Take your own rubbish with you, including biodegradables
- Water is scarce and should be used sparingly. It is used primarily for the running of the guesthouse
(cooking, cleaning) and the toilets. You are therefore strongly advised to bring enough water for your
hikes and for washing, as there is no running water. - Bottled water can be purchased on site.

Capacity: 48 beds in dormitories and 32 beds in bungalows
- Sheets, blankets and towels are not provided. Remember to bring your sleeping bags and
survival blankets, as the nights are cold at this altitude, as well as a sheet for extra comfort. - Pets are not allowed in the refuge.
- Camping is prohibited in the area around the refuge.

Embark on some epic adventures here on Reunion Island with hikes such as the ascent of the Piton
des Neiges from Le Bloc in Cilaos, a popular footpath offering stunning views of the cirque of Cilaos.
Why not try the Jacky Inard footpath, a great experience crossing a variety of forests and ravines,
providing magnificent views of Cilaos and the Piton des Neiges.
Other options include the demanding but rewarding footpath up to Piton des Neiges from Plaine des
Cafres, crossing ladders and gullies, or the Cap Anglais footpath leading up from Hell-Bourg with
spectacular views over Salazie, for a complete immersion in Reunion’s wild, unspoilt beauty.
