Gîte
du Volcan

The Gîte du Volcan is situated at an altitude of 2,240m on the Piton de la Fournaise massif. It is
nestled in the heart of wooded areas that have grown on the valley slopes leading to Rivière de l’Est
and down to the sea. This vegetation contrasts sharply with the surrounding rocky areas.
This is a key stopover along the GRR2 (Reunion’s national footpath known as the ‘Great Crossing’)
for hikers going from Bourg-Murat to Basse-Vallée. It is very popular with hikers and visitors who
want to adventure further out over the majestic, lunar-like setting of Plaine des Sables. It is accessible
by car via the road to Pas de Bellecombe.
Our accommodation is simple but comfortable, providing a typical dormitory experience (shared
bathroom facilities).
Creole cuisine : you’ll be served traditional Creole dishes and cuisine from other parts of the world,
cooked mainly with fresh local ingredients. Meals are a real opportunity to socialise with other guests.
Hiking and excursions : This is the starting point for a number of not-to-be-missed hikes: the climb
to the Dolomieu crater, hiking across Plaine des Sables, Sentier Tremblet, Nez Coupé de Ste Rose,
the valley leading to Rivière de l’Est, etc. Some of these hikes require good physical preparation and
appropriate equipment.
