AGGM Network

Our history
It all began when the ONF (National Forestry Commission) built the first guesthouses and refuges on
land owned by the Departmental Council.
A few key dates :
- 1975: faced with a growing demand for accommodation, the Reunion Tourism Office took over
the management of these sites - 1986: the Departmental Tourism Committee was set up, as well as the ‘Maison de La Montagne’,
an initiative supported by former police officers from the Mountain Rescue Police (PGHM) in
Chamonix - 1995 : the AGGM was founded (Association of Mountain Guesthouse Managers), which took
over the running of public guesthouses and refuges under an agreement with the ONF. Its role is
to promote, markets and manages these establishments, making it a key stakeholder in Reunion’s
tourism industry.
Elle assure la promotion, la commercialisation et la gestion de ces hébergements et devient ainsi un véritable acteur du tourisme réunionnais.
- 2023 : AGGM was awarded the contract to run 8 guesthouses and refuges by the public service
unit of Reunion’s Departmental Council, resulting in the creation of its RandoGîtes brand.
Today, AGGM is much more than just a simple association. It’s a network of experienced and
supportive guesthouse managers working to provide visitors and hikers with a truly unique experience
along Reunion’s epic GR (Grande Randonnée) footpaths, which have all been approved by the French
Federation of Hiking and Trekking.
Our history reflects our commitment to the mountains and sustainable tourism in Reunion over the
last 30 years.
How we work
AGGM is managed by a Board of Directors and an Executive Committee, made up of dedicated
members who ensure that the Association continues to operate smoothly and that its values also carry
on through time.
Our most important strength is solidarity. The principle of ensuring fairness means that we can offer
affordable rates to the general public in all our guesthouses and refuges, while ensuring that less
profitable establishments can continue to operate. This approach has enabled us to weather periods
of crisis and continue to offer quality services.
Our social, societal and economic commitment
As the number of visitors to our guesthouses has increased, the human element has remained at the
heart of our concerns.
Permanent jobs have been created in the different establishments for residents of the communities
where they are located
Guesthouse managers have become true businessmen and women, now finding it easier to reconcile
their professional and family lives by taking well-earned rests.
New services have been introduced to enhance the visitor experience, including online bookings for overnight stays and meals now possible on the IRT (Reunion Island Tourism) reservation platform https://www.reunion.fr/
And in partnership with other tourism stakeholders, the promotion of hiking and trekking really helps
to attract both local and international visitors.
The guesthouse managers are vital contacts for the PGHM, for monitoring, reporting and even
providing telephone or logistical assistance. They contribute effectively to the alert and rescue chain
whenever people are in danger.
Our growth is helping to strengthen community ties, stimulate the local economy and raise the profile
of Reunion’s tourism across and beyond the Indian Ocean.
